Blue Wings
by Kay Kestner:
It is only a blue bird ruff and gray breasted
perched on the rusted chain-link fence
that encloses the weeds we keep in the
backyard. Only a battered and worn
blue bird.
Yet you watch that frayed feathered
old man as if he were the beacon
to green fields and summer blue skies.
How you find hope in his tired wings
eludes me until you softly, hardly
moving your lips, explain that those
weary wings, feathers tattered, and
colors faded became that way from
flying a million miles in any direction
his tiny beadlike eyes set their sights on.
Without blinking, you keep watching
your blue winged hero perched on
that rusty fence you want to tear down.
And even I find myself wishing that
you had your own battered blue wings.

Do Something for Democracy
Given the rapid changes to our government in the United States, it’s vitally important for us to speak up. Silence and apathy will only embolden a leader who serves his own agenda – an agenda that undermines democracy both within the US and around the world.
Every small act adds up when we all “do something.” Even if it’s just making one call, once a week to one of your representatives – that adds up!
The resources on the Do Something for Democracy page give you ways you can take action. Find what fits your comfort level. No one can do it all, but we all can do a little something.
